St. Augustine in St. Johns County, FL is the oldest continuously inhabited settlement established by Europeans within the continental U.S. It was founded in 1565 by Spanish admiral Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, who also served as Florida’s first governor. Now, the city has worked to restore its colonial areas and is a popular tourist destination due to its historical attractions including Castillo de San Marcos, an old fort in St. Augustine on the Matanzas River.
